Far right activists have tried to blame the sudden death of a man following a medical episode on asylum seekers.

The man, in his 30s, became seriously ill near Saggart Luas Terminal in south west Dublin on Wednesday evening, August 7.

Gardai were requested by the National Ambulance Service to assist with the medical emergency and gardai sealed off Fortunestown Lane to allow ambulance personnel to treat the seriously ill man.

He was taken from the scene to Tallaght Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Several online accounts on TikTok and X, formerly known as Twitter posted videos of gardai attending the scene at Fortunestown Lane with false comments from so-called far right activists claiming asylum seekers were involved in the man’s death - a claim which has been slammed by An Garda Siochana.

In a statement, An Garda Siochana said they are aware of posts and comments online with misinformation and disinformation speculating and linking the man’s sudden death to Immigration and International Protection.

“This speculation and commentary is completely false,” An Garda Siochana said in the statement.

“This sort of baseless speculation is not only generally unhelpful, but is upsetting to a family who have in the very immediate lost a loved one.

“An Garda Síochána is very aware of online misinformation, disinformation and fake news, not just in relation to this incident, but in general, in widespread public circulation.

“An Garda Síochána appeals to all members of the public to independently verify any information that you are reading on social media and/ or messaging apps,” the statement said.
