Daniel Wiffen has set himself high ambitions for his first ever marathon swim in open water - he's chasing another podium finish after winning his first two Olympic medals in the pool.

Wiffen, 23, is going into the unknown with this 10,000m marathon but is happy that it is going ahead in the Seine, after all the controversy over the condition of the river.

"I mean, obviously it's my first ever race, so I'm still going with high expectations," he said, with a gold and bronze medal already banked.

"You know, I want to be on the podium still for my first time. That'd be pretty unbelievable. But we'll see what happens, you know, open water is very tactical.

"It's not really about speed or high endurance or training. It's really just about the racing. It's all very tactical.

"We've got an Irish coach coming in for my feeder to give me the cuts and it's also on the feeding. So it's a different type of racing and we'll have to see.

"But, I mean, it's going to be a fun one and I'm sure it's probably better to go in blind because it's an hour 45 race - and I don't know what I'm going to do with myself for an hour 45."

The open water marathon swim will start at 6.30am Irish time on Friday.
