Taoiseach Simon Harris has vowed that there will be a cost-of-living package before the end of the year.

He told the Irish Mirror that this will be announced as part of Budget 2025 on October 1.

Negotiations are continuing across Government ahead of this year’s budget, which will take place one week earlier than usual.

The Summer Economic Statement anticipated that the total size of the budget will be €8.3bn, with €1.4bn on new tax measures.

For the last number of years, the budgets have been supplemented by additional cost-of-living packages to ease the pressure of the cost-of-living crisis. This has included elements such as electricity credits and double or lump sum payments.

Speaking at Government Buildings on Wednesday morning, the Taoiseach confirmed that there will be a cost-of-living package delivered before the end of 2024.

He did not, however, reveal what measures people may be able to look forward to.

"There will be a cost-of-living package this calendar year," Mr Harris told the Irish Mirror.

"I think it's very important that there is one. People are still financially hurting.

"While we can point to many indicators that show that inflation is very significantly reducing, it's entirely true, it doesn't take away from the fact that that hasn't been felt yet in homes, businesses, farms right across Ireland.

"Therefore I do think it's important that we look, at a time where the country is doing economically well, at what more practical measures we can take to help people in the here and now.

"Obviously, the composition of the package, the size of it, all of that will be a matter for engagement across government and will be announced on Budget Day on October 1."

Budget speculation is continuing ahead of the big announcement by Finance Minister Jack Chambers and Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe.

As reported by the Irish Mirror earlier this week, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys is examining whether the fuel allowance income threshold can be reduced from 70 to 66.

However, there have been early warnings to those on social welfare that those on Jobseeker’s Allowance who are long-term unemployed are unlikely to get a rise in their weekly payments due to the fact Ireland is at full employment and pay-related social benefit will be introduced early next year for people who have lost their jobs.
