Kellie Harrington's wife has told of her pride after watching the Dubliner make history at the Olympics in Paris.

The Portland Row native beat China's Wenlu Yang at Roland Garros in the women’s 60kg final on Tuesday night to become Ireland's first ever back to back Olympic boxing champion.

Kellie's wife Mandy was at the fight with the boxer's brothers Joel and Christopher and described her emotions after the bout.

"It's just magic," Mandy told RTE. "It's very emotional, completely emotional."

She added: "It was just magic to see them all smiling, dancing, happy and it's just such a relief. They got what they deserved, they got what they worked for, they got what they came for and nobody deserves it more."

Asked how they would celebrate, Mandy replied: "I think we're just so tired, we'll probably not sleep and just enjoy it, relax, hopefully see Kellie, make sure she's okay, kind of just take it day by day and have the little wins.

"We can't wait to celebrate with her. That's the main thing."

Meanwhile, Harrington paid tribute to her family and friends after the victory in the French capital.

“I didn’t think this was possible,” she said.

“Thanks to the coaches here and back home and (wife) Mandy, my brothers and my ma and da and close friends who kept me going even when I didn’t believe.

“And here I am. It’s a nice way to go out.”
