The Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys, has announced that nearly 60,000 18-year-olds are now benefiting from Child Benefit for the first time, following a significant policy extension.

Since May 1 this year, Child Benefit has been expanded to include 18-year-olds who are either in full-time education or have a disability. This change provides a monthly payment of €140 until the young person turns 19.

To date, over 58,000 young individuals in Ireland are receiving this support, which aims to assist families with the costs of education and special needs.

Minister Humphreys commented today: “I am delighted to see so many young people and their families benefitting from this extension of child benefit, a vital support for hard working families. This measure which I successfully brought through Government is now being felt in the pockets of families all over the country.

The extension of Child Benefit to 18 Year Olds in Full-Time Education or with a disability is a long term change for the better which will support all families across Ireland into the future.”
