Derek Lyng to continue in Kilk

Derek Lyng will continue as Kilkenny senior hurling manager for a third season in 2025.

Lyng has won a pair of Leinster titles since being handed the onerous task of succeeding Brian Cody two years ago, though they haven’t been able to bridge the gap to their last All-Ireland title in 2015 just yet, losing the final to Limerick last year and the semi-final to eventual champions Clare last month.

Lyng has also guided Kilkenny to successive League finals which they also lost to Limerick and Clare.

This year’s semi-final defeat means that Kilkenny enter their longest drought without the Liam MacCarthy Cup since 1947-57, though it is acknowledged that Lyng has steered the ship well since taking over from Cody.

Peter Barry, Michael Rice, Conor Phelan and Peter O'Donovan have been part of his management team over the past two years though there is no confirmation as yet on what the make-up of Lyng’s set up in 2025 will be just yet, fuelling speculation that changes may be afoot.

Kilkenny have also ratified Mark Dowling and Niall Bergin as their under-20 and minor managers respectively.

Elsewhere, Donal Og Cusack has been drafted into the Cork under-20 management team under Noel Furlong, who emerged last month as successor to Ben O’Connor as manager having led Cork to the 2021 All-Ireland minor title, their first in 20 years.

Cusack will come on board as coach with Seán Guiheen (Na Piarsaigh), Vincent Hurley (Courcey Rovers) and Tadhg Óg Murphy (Sarsfields) completing the set up.

The three-time All-Ireland winner previously had a stint coaching the Clare senior team alongside Davy Fitzgerald and managed the Cork minors in 2020, without success.
