Temperatures could soar to 24C this weekend as weather models suggest Ireland may experience a blast of "very warm air" before the week is out.

It has been a mixed summer in every sense of the term, with everything from thunderstorms to scorchers landing across the country over the past few months.

As the summer draws to a close, temperatures may get one last spike though it may not be sun-bathing weather.

Forecasters aren't fully confident in the weather models for the weekend and coming weeks just yet but current indications suggest it could be a very warm weekend ahead, though that will come in some unsettled conditions with strong winds and some rain.

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly, who mans the @CarlowWeather account on X, has taken note of the possibility of a low system moving up from the west of Ireland on Sunday.

He posted: "A low system moving up West of Ireland Sunday could very briefly steer up some very warm air over Ireland but also strong winds and risk of some rain. Weather models struggling to get agree on details yet though."

Met Eireann seems to concur with his forecast, suggesting that Sunday could see highs of 24C but it will be a mainly overcast and blustery day as rain spreads from the southwest. The west will see the heaviest and most persistent rain through the day, with fresh and gusty southerly winds.

Today, meanwhile, is forecast to start with mainly cloudy conditions and scattered showers in the morning but it will get drier and brighter in much of the country into the afternoon and evening. The southwest will experience more cloud than the rest of Ireland, with light rain or drizzle this evening. Highs of between 16C and 20C are expected.

Tomorrow, Thursday, will be a somewhat dull day as rain spreads eastwards across the country. The rain will ease into the afternoon as extended dry spells develop in highs of 21C.

Friday is to be a brighter day, with the country experiencing a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers, which will be most frequent in the west and north. The southeast will enjoy the best of the weather as temperatures range between 17C and 21C.

On Saturday, showers will spread across Ireland from the west with the south facing the highest risk of persistent rain. There will be extended sunny spells too, however, as temperatures rise to between 18C and 23C.
