Today's GAA headlines as Clare

Here are your GAA headlines for Friday, July 19:

Cork names unchanged team for All-Ireland Hurling Final

Pat Ryan has named the same lineup that defeated Limerick in the All-Ireland semi-final for Sunday's final against Clare.

Cork completed an upset victory over Limerick two weeks ago ending their drive-for-five to book their place in Sunday's clash. Ryan has chosen to stick with the side that got them into the final for the tie.

Starting for Cork: Patrick Collins; Niall O’Leary, Eoin Downey, Seán O’Donoghue (c); Ciarán Joyce, Robert Downey, Mark Coleman; Tim O’Mahony, Darragh Fitzgibbon; Declan Dalton, Shane Barrett, Seamus Harnedy; Patrick Horgan, Alan Connolly, Brian Hayes.

Brian Lohan keeps the same line-up for Sunday's Final

Clare is also sticking with the same XV that started over the semi-final victory over Kilkenny for Sunday's crucial All-Ireland final against Cork.

The Banner side shows two switches from the side that began the Munster SHC Round 2 win over Cork in April. Conor Leen and Tony Kelly now feature instead of Rory Hayes and Cian Galvin who are among the substitutes.

Clare's starting lineup: Eibhear Quilligan; Adam Hogan, Conor Cleary, Conor Leen; Diarmuid Ryan, John Conlon, David McInerney; David Fitzgerald, Cathal Malone: Tony Kelly (c), Mark Rodgers, Peter Duggan; Aidan McCarthy, Shane O’Donnell, David Reidy.

Taoiseach Simon Harris gifts Donegal GAA jersey to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer

Sir Keir Starmer has been gifted a Donegal GAA jersey from Taoiseach Simon Harris during the Fine Gael leader's visit to Britain.

Starmer shares a special connection to the Forgotten County, the new PM spoke on his thoughts of the county before.

He said: "Donegal is a special place to me and my family and across this house,” he said of Donegal following the Creeslough Tragedy, which claimed the lives of 10 people in October 2022. “The people there are in all of our thoughts."

Before Euro 2020, Starmer posted a photo on Twitter, with the caption: "Finally back in training! Still got a few months before Gareth Southgate announces the squad for the Euros..."

The photo showed Starmer wearing a Donegal training top during a five-a-side soccer match. He later revealed that the top he was pictured in was bought whilst on honeymoon with his wife Victoria in Ireland back in 2007.

In return, the new Prime Minster presented Harris with a Downing Street whiskey decanter set.

French GAA team arrives in Ireland for a three-game tour

A France GAA team has travelled to Ireland to play three challenge games this week.

Matches against Portobello, Na Fianna, and Beann Eadair have been organised by the French travelling group of players.

The first game was on Thursday night against Portobello GAA club in Dublin. The final score was 1-10 vs 0-02 with France taking the large win.

France GAA's secretary Stephen Hegarty explains the French infatuation that exists for Gaelic Football: “It's only French-born players, I usually play, but I'm still injured, unfortunately, I'd have been the only one with some sort of Irish connection,” Hegarty says.

He continued: “All the rest of the guys are 100 percent French, they all started playing in France. We don't get a chance to play 15-a-side that much in France. You only have two 15-a-side pitches in continental Europe."

There are currently 30 GAA clubs in France as the game grows in the country with 1,100 players registered for the Gaelic games.

There is currently only one 15-a-side Gaelic football pitch in France, which is located in Rennes, a two-hour drive away from Hegarty who lives in Caen in the north of France. However, Hegarty said it is not an “official” GAA pitch as it is just two soccer pitches put together.

But Hegarty said he wants the game to continue to expand and eventually get a 15-a-side pitch.

Hegarty said: “We need support to get the pitches built in France but we are trying to work on that, which is why we are here.”

On Friday, the travelling team will take part in a training session with the Dublin Senior women’s team before they play Na Fianna of Glasnevin in Dublin.

The French will play one last game against Beann Eadair of Howth in Dublin on Saturday before heading back home.
