Gardai seize 'neglected' pony

A 'neglected' pony which was in a 'poor condition' was seized by gardai after its owner used the animal to travel a long distance to a garda station in Cork.

The small pony was used to pull a sulky cart to travel to Anglesea Street station in Cork city, where the owner was due by appointment on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Cork Beo, the owner had travelled a significant distance on busy public roads with the horse and sulky cart to get to the station.

Gardai said they were 'alarmed' at the emaciated pony's poor condition and officers contacted a veterinarian to assess and provide medical care for the animal.

Gardai seized the pony from the owner, and the animal is now in the care of a local shelter.

A garda investigation into the incident is underway, and a garda spokesperson said in a statement: "We seized this pony yesterday afternoon after its owner used it to travel some distance to Anglesea Street Garda Station as they were due into the station by appointment.

"We were alarmed to see the pony's poor condition, in particular knowing that it had just been brought on a long journey to carry someone.

"We immediately arranged that the neglected pony be assessed and receive some much needed care.

"This lovely animal is now with a local shelter and our investigation is ongoing."
