Teddy Sheringham has been hailed by Roy Keane as the finest captain he's ever played under, despite their infamous scuffle at Manchester United.

The pair were team-mates for four trophy-laden years at the Red Devils, clinching three Premier League titles and completing an historic Treble in the 1998/99 season.

Their time together was marked by success on the pitch, but off it they weren't exactly the best of friends, with Keane openly admitting his dislike for Sheringham, a revelation that came to light during an exchange with Gary Neville on The Overlap, reports the Manchester Evening News.

In a viral social media snippet, Neville, brandishing a photo of Sheringham, teased Keane with hints about the mystery man's identity as the ex-United captain joked: "You didn't like him... that could be anybody. Jeez, I've got a list" leading Keane to correctly guess: "No, you shouldn't say I didn't like him... Jordi [Cruyff]? Or Teddy?"

The Irishman later sought to clarify the nature of their relationship, stating: "That's wrong. I didn't mind Teddy, I just didn't get on with him. We had a fallout but that's just working".

In an interview with Online Poker, the Englishman spoke highly of his former team-mate despite a rather heated past as he said: "I always respected Roy, he was our captain and our leader and was one of the best players I ever played with. I loved having him in my football teams I played with him at Nottingham Forest as well as Manchester United and there was no better leader in football that I'd played for.

"Players within big squads will always have differences in opinions, but in terms of what he did on the pitch in the years that I played with him, he was the best captain that I ever played under."

Sheringham previously opened up about the tense fall-out he had with Keane, which is detailed in the book '1999: Manchester United, the Treble and All That', during which they didn't exchange a word for three-and-a-half-years after a fierce spat.

"I'm sitting behind the driver, Keany was next to the driver," he explained in the book. "Steve Bruce is next to me, [Gary] Pallister, Denis [Irwin], a couple of others in there. Bit of banter flying about in the car. Suddenly, Keany said: 'Why don't you f*** off back to London in your f***ing red Ferrari and your penthouse?

"I was taken aback and asked: 'Eh? '; and he insists: 'Yeah, f*** off back to London'. I was stunned and said: 'Are you coming for me, Keany? Why are you coming for me. What the hell?!'"

"And he went: 'f*** off', and he goes on: 'f***ing red Ferrari, penthouse...' Then he jumped round, still with his bad leg, got me by the tie, pulled me towards him, grappling with him. Suddenly everyone's going: 'What's going on? ' and pulling us apart."
