Tánaiste Micheál Martin has stated that a Foreign Minister of another European country approached him to raise concerns about their citizen being killed in Ireland.

He made the comments as he argued that it is not just asylum seekers being targeted in Ireland for being foreign nationals.

The Fianna Fáil leader also branded scenes that saw asylum seekers’ tents slashed in Dublin City on Tuesday evening as "reprehensible".

In Kenya, Mr Martin was pressed by reporters about the safety of asylum seekers following several incidents, including protests seen in Coolock earlier this week.

However, he said that it is not just those who are seeking international protection that are being targeted and subjected to violence.

"It is not just asylum seekers. Already, we have cases of people from different countries being murdered in Ireland," the Tánaiste stated.

"There was a situation, I don’t want to pre-empt certain cases before the courts, but I was approached at one European Foreign Ministers’ meeting in terms of the citizen of another European country as to the circumstances around the death of that individual. That's now before the courts and people have been arrested.

"We've had another case recently as well."

The Tánaiste also condemned the attacks on asylum seekers’ tents in Dublin, saying that it was "reprehensible" that people would do that to "fellow human beings".

"Ireland, I would like to think because of our own history, will always retain a sense of humanity," he continued.

"We should not ever allow ourselves to get to the level [where we] witness such attacks on fellow human beings, irrespective of how people come into the country or whatever your views are.

"The dignity of the human being is something that is central to our ethos and value system. It's reprehensible. It has to be condemned.

"That people would undermine the dignity of fellow human beings… As a society, we have to resist this as strongly as we possibly can, and not create excuses for our attempt to justify or rationalise it. It's just not good enough. It is not what we are about as Irish people."
