The tragic discovery of Jay Slater's body has sparked a flurry of questions, with rumours of a 'stolen Rolex' adding to the mystery.

A body was discovered on Monday in the exact location where missing Jay's phone last pinged. His best mate, who was with him in Tenerife on the night he disappeared, is leading online tributes to the 19-year-old.

Since news broke of human remains being found in the Masca area of the Canary Island, social media users who have been following the case for the past month have all been asking the same question. Was there a Rolex watch on the wrist of the remains?

Spanish police were instructed to investigate an alleged theft of a £12,000 Rolex that was reported to be linked to the missing Jay Slater. According to local police, a brawl over a missing Rolex erupted at the Papagayo Beach Club where Jay was partying in the early hours of June 17.

The teen mysteriously disappeared on the island that same night, after telling a friend that he planned to walk from an Airbnb to southern Tenerife, a journey that would have taken 11 hours. During this time, his phone battery died, reports the Mirror.

Police called off a large-scale search for the missing 19-year-old on June 30 but kept the investigation open. Ex-British police detective Mark Williams-Thomas questioned why Slater didn't return to his accommodation to get some water or charge his phone.

Despite there being no concrete evidence of Jay nicking a watch, the mere suggestion has sent armchair detectives and TikTok sleuths into overdrive. The Daily Star reports that X, formerly Twitter, is now buzzing with chatter about the watch saga.

One queried: "Clothes and possessions' found, #JaySlater , can anyone confirm if he was wearing a #Rolex ? ? " Another mused: "I wonder if Jay Slater had the Rolex on his person? ".

"It looks like the body of jay slater has been found, was he wearing a Rolex watch," pondered a third. And yet another post on X speculated: "I wonder if the £20k stolen Rolex watch was also found on Jay Slater."

Williams-Thomas disclosed that Jay "posted a Snapchat saying that he'd taken a £12,000 Rolex from a person". He mentioned: "We've received information that would suggest that Jay left the rental property feeling scared and he would not return to the rental, even though that would have been the most sensible course of action."

The detective also noted that while the police couldn't conclusively link this to a robbery, he added: "Friends of Jay said he would not make this up and the watch was subject of later conversation between the friends."

A Guardia Civil spokesperson announced that a body had been found after weeks of an extensive manhunt in the rugged Masca region on Monday. "The mountain rescue and intervention group of the Civil Guard has located the lifeless body of a young man in the Masca area after 29 days of constant search. Given the complexity of the case, the discovery has been possible thanks to the incessant and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard during these 29 days, in which the natural space was preserved so that it would not be filled with curious onlookers."
