Jay Slater: Cafe manager warns

The boss of a cafe near to the spot Jay Slater is said to have been found dead said the tragedy is "something inexplicable".

Elvira, who runs Teno, an eatery in the remote national park in northwest Tenerife, spoke to reporters about her sadness following the grim find on Monday. It was confirmed in court the body found was that of the missing tourist, who flew to the Canary Island with friends for a music festival last month.

The cafe served as a convenient lookout point for the official search operation for 19-year-old Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. Elvira said: "It surprised me a lot that Jay ended up here. Very much. It's not normal here, it's something very strange. Having the police here every day over two weeks, and nothing. It's something inexplicable."

Jay travelled north from a rave in Playa de las Americas to a secluded corner of the Canary Island after receiving an invitation to an Airbnb on the outskirts of Masca by two men. He departed the property on foot, reportedly phoned his friend Lucy Law at 8.30am to inform her he was lost and his phone battery was at one per cent, and has been missing ever since, Manchester Evening News reports.

Elvira had spoken amid the huge search operation. She believed Jay wasn't in close proximity to the restaurant, or the nearby Airbnb at which the teenager had stayed. She had said: "I don't think Jay is still in this area. I think he's with other people, somewhere else."

But Spanish police are refusing to say whether they have recovered a £12,000 Rolex watch Jay Slater allegedly stole before his death. The Civil Guard in Tenerife confirmed the missing man's body found in a ravine near the village of Masca was his and said everything was pointing to him dying in an accidental fall.

They also said his injuries had included broken bones in a statement released shortly after court officials also revealed Jay's identity had been confirmed through fingerprints, after initially claiming full identification wouldn't happen until "next week" because the body was "very deteriorated."

The question of whether police now have a watch the 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer reportedly confessed to stealing from a reveller during an altercation outside Papagayo Beach Club near his holiday accommodation, remains unanswered.
