Inside the treacherous Tenerif

This is the treacherous Tenerife gorge, believed to be where Jay Slater's body was found.

Located just a mile from his phone's last known signal - picked up by a nearby tower - the area is infamous for its challenging hiking conditions. Surrounded by towering cliffs on both sides of the valley, it holds an enticing view of the ocean, sparking local speculation that this may have attracted the ill-fated 19-year-old, who had texted a friend about being completely lost.

Fresh photos highlight the hazardous expanse of the gorge - the supposed site of Jay Slater's untimely demise. The lingering question is why Jay would venture into such risky terrain in the first place, says Helena Gomes, 35, a local resident.

In spite of the associated dangers, she accepts the natural allure of the environment continues to draw people in. Helena said: "You see how bad it is, we don't even walk there, so if someone gets into trouble it is going to be hard for anyone to find the body. No one is surprised it took so long, why he was there is a mystery, he should never have been going that way, maybe he saw the ocean and thought it was the best way. We just feel so bad for his family but are so proud of the searchers who found him, they never gave up.", reports the Manchester Evening News.

A crew from The Mirror set off to navigate what is believed to be the path Jay took from the Airbnb he was inhabiting in Masca a neighbouring village. The journey up to the edge of the ravine itself took over an hour.

The treacherous terrain made it evident how a disoriented young lad, far from his usual surroundings, could quickly find himself in a perilous situation.

A video released by the Guardia Civil on Tenerife this morning highlights the challenging landscape of the search area. The footage, taken by specialist mountain rescue teams who found Jay's body, shows personnel being airlifted from the rugged terrain.

The extensive police search in the mountains near Masca was called off about two weeks after Jay disappeared on June 17. However, mountain rescue police specialists carried on with a more discreet, smaller-scale daily search.

A post-mortem examination on Tuesday confirmed that the body is that of the apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire, in north west England. The devastating discovery was made near the village of Masca on Monday morning by the mountain rescue division of the Civil Guard.

The Spanish police force stated that all evidence indicated it was Jay and that his death was accidental, resulting from a fall. A court spokesperson in Tenerife confirmed on Tuesday that fingerprints verified the body belonged to the missing teenager. They added that the injuries suggested he had fallen from a cliff.

It was also revealed that the body was discovered near where his phone last signalled on Monday, June 17, along with his clothes and personal items. Jay, 19, vanished while on his inaugural holiday with mates at a three-day music festival, the NRG Tenerife Weekender.
