"It's coming home. It's coming home, it's coming. Football's coming home. It's coming home. It's coming home, it's coming. Football's coming home."

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past month, you have almost certainly heard the above words being played somewhere. However, football is not coming home as England's latest bid for silverware once again ended in failure.

Gareth Southgate's side came into Euro 2024 as tournament favourites and made it all the way to the final, despite some below par performances in Germany.

That couldn't stop them dreaming though and England fans were as confident as ever that their long wait for a major tournament win would end in Berlin. But it wasn't to be as Spain ran out 2-1 winners in Sunday's final at the famous Olympic Stadium, home to Hertha Berlin, thanks to goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal, while Cole Palmer netted for England.

Prior to the tournament, former Arsenal star Paul Merson boldly predicted that England would go all the way and be crowned champion in very bullish fashion. He said on Sky Sports months before the tournament started: "How do we not win the Euros? Honestly, I'd be shocked if we didn't win it...

"I just don't see how we don't win it, I'd be shocked. I don't want to put pressure on Gareth, but I think this would be a failure if we don't win it.

"I really would, I don't see anyone who would live with us. France have got probably two players that would get in our team."

Fans were quick to remind Merson of the comments after Sunday's final, with one writing on social media: "What a load of bollocks spoken by Paul Merson and the other guy. This is typical of English sporting pundits, particularly the football pundits, they are all wrapped up in their own delusional self importance and arrogance, with no reason for them to be arrogant."

Another said: "Didn't watch this before! I'm shocked. How can Paul Merson & the others are so arrogant? I'm truly flabbergasted."

Someone else wrote: "Paul Merson was every disillusioned England fan. You don’t win it by not being good enough. Same as every other tournament for 58 years."

"Thoughts and Prayers with Paul Merson tonight," commented another.
