Religious and national minority schools are entitled to the same support as schools maintained by the Klebelsberg Center (central management body for the school district centers) and municipal schools, the State Secretary for Religious and National Minority Relations said on Monday.

Miklós Soltész pointed out at the opening of the renewed Saint Benedict Technical, Secondary and Vocational School in Budaörs (in the Budapest metropolitan area) that the school, which was renewed with HUF 1.150 billion (EUR 2.9 million) in government funding and is maintained by the Benedictine monastic order, has three times the number of over-enrolments.

He noted that

the renovation of the school is part of a process in which 5,680 kindergartens and schools have been renovated or enriched with new buildings in Hungary since 2018, with a total of HUF 1,400 billion (3.5 billion).

He stressed that

church and minority schools will receive the same support as state and municipal schools, including free textbooks for pupils and a pay raise for teachers.

The politician thanked teachers for their patience during a difficult period when they were far from receiving the benefits they deserved. He added that the teachers’ pay raise would continue as promised by the government.

He added that many companies operating in Buda̦rs Рincluding road construction, telecommunications and IT Рneed to find new specialists. The Benedictine order has taken on this task.

Tamás Wittinghoff, mayor of the town, said in his welcome speech that the aim was to make education in the municipality as diverse as possible, and therefore the school building was handed over to the Benedictine order in a spirit of mutual trust. He noted that the local government had not let go of the educational institutions of the municipality even after the schools were put under state maintenance, and that they were contributing hundreds of millions of forints to their operation.
