In order to fight illegal migration, people smuggling and other cross-border crimes even more effectively, the number of Austrian police contingent serving in Hungary will be increased, the Communications Service of the National Police Headquarters (ORFK) announced on Monday on police.hu.

They wrote that since the agreement signed by the interior ministers of the two countries in 2020, Austrian police officers have been continuously helping to protect the external borders of the European Union, to fight illegal migration and people smugglers.

The eighteen Austrian police officers currently serving in the contingent were joined by another seven on Monday, and

it is planned that from the middle of the month a total of 48-50 Austrian police officers will assist their Hungarian colleagues on joint patrols.

The Austrian police officers will wear their own uniforms and equipment during their activities in Hungary, and will act in accordance with Hungarian law, only together with Hungarian police officers, the police stated.

They added that joint patrols are mainly carried out on Hungary’s southern borders, checking mainly border settlements and roads.

Fact

Not only Austrian police officers are on duty in Hungary. As Hungary Today previously reported, Hungary has concluded an agreement with Beijing that provides for “cooperation in judicial and security matters.” Sándor Pintér agreed with the Chinese Minister of Public Security in mid-February that Hungarian and Chinese police officers will carry out joint patrol duties. The Ministry of Interior confirmed that police officers from the two countries will be able to jointly carry out patrol duties in the future, thus helping to improve communication between citizens and authorities of the two countries, improving internal security and public order.” The cooperation agreement is aimed at improving security in tourist areas of the two countries during peak tourist periods and generally during events that attract large crowds.
