Dr. Gergely Németh has been appointed as the Director General of the Defense Innovation Research Institute (VIKI) by Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, effective from September 1.
As honvedelem.hu writes, his leadership is expected to strengthen VIKI’s research, development, and military science efforts, supporting the broader transformation of the Defense Forces.
The appointment of Dr. Németh marks a significant leadership change at VIKI, aiming to enhance its role in innovation and collaboration with European, allied systems, and other international partners. Under his guidance, VIKI is expected to focus on increasing efficiency within the evolving defense industrial environment and bolstering defense awareness and the reserve system in Hungary.
Dr. Németh brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having spent the majority of his 17-year career in the Defense Forces Planning Department of the General Staff.
He has held numerous key positions, including Deputy State Secretary for Defense Policy and International Relations, where he played a crucial role in developing Hungary’s National Security Strategy and National Military Strategy. He also served as Hungary’s representative for defense planning and force development in NATO, as well as the International Deputy Director of Armaments.
Before his current appointment, Dr. Németh led NATO’s Future Research Group. This group specializes in studying future warfare and technology environments, providing strategic insights to NATO on adapting to emerging threats. His work at NATO included contributing to the Hungarian Force Development Program and establishing the Central European Division Headquarters in Székesfehérvár (central Hungary).
Gergely Németh’s extensive experience in planning and strategy, along with his international recognition—such as the French Ordre national du Mérite and NATO commendations—positions him well to lead VIKI.
