President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar are due to attend the annual end-of-year reception hosted by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Colin Stewart on Tuesday evening.
The event will take place at 7pm at the Ledra Palace. The two leaders’ last encounter took place during an informal dinner hosted by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York on October 15.
The outcome of the meeting was an agreement to hold a future multilateral meeting including the guarantor powers and to discuss the opening of more crossing points.
There have been no developments yet leading to either other than a probable visit to Cyprus in the new year by UN Assistant General Secretary Rosemary DiCarlo.
In the framework of the preparation, DiCarlo will visit the island “in the first months” of 2025, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Monday.
He said she may also discuss the issue of opening additional crossing points with the two leaders.
So far only the Greek Cypriot side has submitted proposals on this matter, it was reported on Sunday, while the president said the Greek Cypriot side is “fully prepared” and has done “all the relevant preparatory work.
The two sides have yet to breach their differences on the locations of the crossing points.
