Nicosia will host SESAM Identity 2.0, an architectural and cultural event, from March 1-10, 2025, according to an announcement released on Friday.
Organised by EASA Cyprus NGO, the gathering will bring 150 participants, including architecture students and young professionals from across Europe, to explore the theme of identity through 12 interdisciplinary workshops.
“This is no ordinary meeting; it’s an extraordinary celebration of architecture, culture, and identity,” declared EASA Cyprus in a statement, promising a “vibrant event” that will transform the old city with pavilions, art installations, and performances rooted in Nicosia’s rich cultural fabric.
Workshops will span disciplines from construction and theory to artistic expression, taking place at diverse locations within Nicosia’s Venetian walls.
The announcement also said that the “event offers the public an opportunity to witness the real-time creation of site-specific projects inspired by the city’s layered history and architecture”.
Moreover, the project follows preparatory initiatives, including online lectures and a European Heritage Days event, aimed at building connections within the local community and fostering dialogue about Nicosia’s urban identity.
EASA stated that that the event’s location is especially poignant. “Nicosia, the last divided capital of Europe, is a living tapestry of architectural legacies and collective memory,” EASA said.
This makes it “the ideal backdrop to explore identity through the lenses of ritual, representation, memory, and sensory experience”.
With a collaborative and experimental approach to education, EASA aims to promote Cyprus as a hub for architectural innovation while fostering international connections.
The event invites local stakeholders to participate and support what EASA calls “a platform for discovery, growth, and creative exchange”.
