The king of Slovak bread is in Czechia (list of the largest bakeries)
One name rules them all.
No matter what, bread and pastries will always sell, and Slovaks spend hundreds of millions of euros on them every year. Naturally, there are groups on the market wanting to profit from the demand.
Which company on the market is the biggest and which made the top 10 list? The answer to that can be found in this INDEX list of the largest bakery companies in Slovakia.
At the outset, it must be said that the bakery market is marked by an anomaly the roots of which trace back to 2011, when former Czech PM Andrej Babiš's Agrofert group tried to take over the United Bakeries group's bakeries in Bratislava and Žilina.
However, the Antimonopoly Office did not allow it; by doing so, the group would have gained a disproportionate share of the market. However, in the following years, Babiš acquired the bakeries indirectly through a third party. All this happened without these purchases approved by the Antimonopoly Office and he eventually received a fine of €21 million.
If Andrej Babiš's group had followed the rules, the list would have looked different. However, since there are no ifs in business, the situation on the market is different.
10. Blanche Trade
Location: Snina
Sales: €14.9 million (+ 13 percent)
Profit: €6345
Beneficiaries: Martin Majirský
The very first company on the list can be called controversial. Blanche Trade owns the Ilas brand operating in eastern Slovakia. The company's history goes back to 2003, when its owners were hiding behind a network of companies. However, the Ilčišin family could be seen in the background, including Ignác Ilčišin, a name well known to the public due to the Transpetrol case (he pretended to represent Transpetrol and accepted claims towards the state-owned crude oil transporter - Ed. note). He was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to 11 years. Blanche Trade's partners are the Residence Reality Partner and Medovník VII limited liability companies. The sole owner of the former is Martin Majirský, while behind the latter lies a confusing web of companies. Majirský's name is behind 9 companies named Pekáreň Ilas followed by numbers 99 to 107. In all cases, he replaced František Ilčišin.
9. Šarišské Pekárne a Cukrárne (lit. The Šariš Bakeries and Confectionaries)
Location: Prešov
Sales: €14.9 million (+ 19 percent)
Profit: €415,000
Beneficiaries: Andrej Babiš, Zbyněk Průša, Alexej Bílek, Monika Babišová, Václav Knotek
After several years, the Prešov-based company had a good year, as the last time it reported profit was in 2016. Record sales helped a lot, almost reaching the threshold of €15 million. Despite being one of the largest companies on the market, it does not have its own website. It belongs to and is reported on by the Penam Group, behind which is Andrej Babiš who will appear several times later in this list.
