The exhibition Figure in Rods by the late artist Ray Pitrè will now form part of the permanent collection at MICAS.

The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici, inaugurated the first exhibition by a Maltese artist at Malta's International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS). The exhibition showcases the sculpture by the late artist Ray Pitrè.

The artist's family members, who were present during the inauguration, noted that Pitrè passed away at the end of 2024. His final work, Figure in Rods, has now become a permanent part of MICAS's collection.

"We are at a significant moment in our nation's cultural journey as we celebrate Raymond Pitrè's legacy and reinforce our commitment to placing Maltese art on the international stage through MICAS, our new museum dedicated to contemporary art. The recent loss of Ray Pitrè reminds us of his extraordinary talent, which made him synonymous with a unique artistic identity, from his pioneering work in the 1960s where he explored various forms of expression and created profound works even from materials discarded by society," Minister Bonnici said.

The Minister added that Pitrè's final masterpiece, Figure in Rods, now permanently installed at MICAS, "embodies the innovative spirit and artistic excellence that deserves international recognition."

Another key highlight of the inauguration was the development of MICAS's ambitious programme, which the Minister stated would ensure that current and future generations of Maltese artists find the support, recognition, and international platform they deserve.

The exhibition was introduced by MICAS Executive Chairperson Phyllis Muscat, MICAS Artistic Director Edith Devaney, and art historian Prof. Joseph Paul Cassar.

Executive Chairperson Phyllis Muscat stated, "It is an honour for us to become the custodians of Ray Pitrè's final work at this early stage of MICAS's mission to bring international contemporary art to Malta, while also showcasing Maltese contemporary art to the world. With the permanent placement of Figure in Rods, MICAS celebrates the artistic legacy of one of Malta's finest artists and underscores our mission to engage Maltese art and artists in dialogue with the international artistic community."
