NGO Repubblika on Friday said its honoroary president Robert Aquilina and lawyer Jason Azzopardi are facing a campaign of "hate and intimidation" coordinated by former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
Repubblika's reaction followed Muscat's testimony on Thursday during Constitutional proceedings in which he claimed that his human rights had been breached in the Vitals case.
Reppublika said it renews its "total" solidarity with Aquilina and Azzopardi who remain "in the sights of a systematic campaign of hate and intimidation orchestrated by [former prime minister] Joseph Muscat."
It said that this campaign against Aquilina has real consequences with "a number of people close to the Labour Party being taken up to the criminal courts and without exception being found guilty of a foment of hatred and physical threats of violence in Aquilina's regard." It added that on Thursday, Muscat "silenced" the questions of the prosecution with a reprimand saying, "Don't forget that you are speaking to a former prime minister."
It said that during the sworn testimony of Muscat on Thursday, he "repeatedly lied" and accused everyone, listing "magistrates, investigators, court experts, prosecutors, the state advocate, journalists, activists [and] politicians," of being in a "conspiracy" against him in an attempt to "prove his innocence by accusing others of fabricated guilt." It went on to condemn the "villainous way" in which Muscat is attacking Aquilina.
Repubblika pointed out that this occurred shortly after Muscat's "spokesperson" Jason Micallef "laid the foundation" through a Facebook post in which he accused Aquilina and Azzopardi of being "crazy, dangerous and must be silenced." It said that this is a "systematic and personal intimidation campaign" that has been going on for years and reminds them of the campaign that was carried out against Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Repubblika said that "undoubtedly" no one can forget that Muscat had the power of a prime minister since it is that power he is accused of abusing. Yet he expects that he "abuses of that power, enjoys impunity and intimidates everyone who comes in his way." It went on to "remind" the state that it has the obligation of protecting Aquilina, Azzopardi and everyone who does their duty to see justice for all, particularly for "former prime ministers that abused of the power that was lent to them." It concluded in saying that Aquilina, Azzopardi and Repubblika as a whole are not afraid to confront Muscat until he "he pays for his actions."
