The Labour Party on Thursday welcomed the recommendations made in the Labour Migration Policy launched on Wednesday for public consultation, which the party said strikes a clear balance between the rights of workers and that of employers.
This policy is testimony that the Labour government continues to offer solutions, the PL said.
The labour market reflects on the economic success of the Labour Government, and although the country should be proud of its achievements, it also needs to address challenges arising from new realities as a result of the same success, the PL said. "What we have achieved in the fields of work and the economy results thanks to the courage of the people and the direction given by the Government with important reforms, where from a situation of unemployment, today we are talking about 'full employment'," the PL said.
"Government is fully aware that Malta's impressive economic success also calls for challenges to be addressed to ensure better quality, and full control over who comes to Malta for employment purposes which policies must be aligned with the government's vision for a country of quality. The Malta Labour Migration Policy, which builds upon other initiatives taken in the past few months to ensure a country of quality, is intended to do just that."
The emphasis on workers' rights is a clear demonstration of the principles that make the Labour Party, whilst the proposals made are intended to ensure that Maltese workers are given the best possible opportunities and that they are in no way put at a disadvantage due to unfair competition, the PL added.
The Malta Labour Migration Policy provides clear and well-studied proposals that "contrast sharply with the Nationalist Party populist rhetoric that provides no proposals nor solutions to today's realities," the PL said.
"The Labour Party hoped that in the national discussion that shall ensue on this matter, arguments based on facts shall prevail so as to ensure a mature public consultation process to even better the sound policy document that was launched Wednesday."
