Archbishop Charles Scicluna on Thursday visited the Jesuit Church in Valletta where extensive restoration and conservation work is in the process of being carried out, the Archdiocese of Malta stated.

The Archdiocese said that during the visit, the Archbishop thanked everyone who has given their part so that the Jesuit Church in Valletta and its heritage can continue to be of service to society. It added that he also spoke of how many entities and companies have joined together for one goal through this conservation project.

It stated that several conservation works have been carried out on the church in question throughout the last four years, including on the facades of the church, the sacristy, and the two oratories. It continued that the work includes structural rehabilitation, the cleaning of historic walls and ceilings, and stone restoration, among others. It said that the marble floor, the altars, and the wooden beams were also restored.

The Archdiocese commented that the Church of the Circumcision of the Lord, otherwise known as the Jesuit Church, is one of the oldest churches in Valletta, and one of the largest in the Archdiocese of Malta. It said that the church was originally built between 1593 and 1609 by the Jesuit Order, and continued that the church includes works of art by Mattia Preti, Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, Stefano Erardi, and Alessio Erardi among others. It said that the titular altar was made by Filippo Paladini.

It added that the Archbishop was accompanied by Administrative Secretary Michael Pace Ross and the President of the Jesuit Church Foundation Reverend Nicholas Doublet.
