A man was sentenced to 10 years in jail on Monday after he admitted to repeatedly raping his partner.
The aggressor and his victim, whose names are not being published to protect the identity of the victim, had been in a relationship for four years, during which the man was occasionally admitted to Mount Carmel Hospital to recover from alcoholism.
After a good first six months of the relationship, things changed when the man started to drink.
The court heard that he wanted his partner to stay naked and be intimate with him whenever it pleased him. He violently forced himself on her whenever she refused, on occasions several times during the day and night.
He also threatened the woman he would kill her dog that if she left him. She ended up giving her dog for adoption following which she reported the accused to the police in August 2021.
The court, presided by Madame Justice Consuelo Scerri Herrera, agreed with the terms of the plea bargain and sentenced the accused to 10 years of effective imprisonment.
He was also ordered to pay court costs of €4,151.38.
