Malta will be participating in the Jubilee of the Pilgrims of Hope 2025, in which there will be the presence of a number of prisoners as part of their rehabilitation, the Ministry for Home Affairs said on Thursday.
The Ministry said that the commitment to participate in the jubilee reflects the work that the Correctional Services Agency is carrying out, particularly in relation to the mental health of prisoners, as well as rehabilitation and integration programs. It continued that this is not only through agreements with NGOs in the rehabilitation sector but also with the opening of halfway houses. It stated that the third halfway house and the first one for women will be opening in the coming time.
It said this following a bilateral meeting where Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri spoke with the Secretary of State of the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The meeting took place in Rome, and the Ministry said that several matters relevant to the two states were discussed.
The Ministry stated that Minister Camilleri and Cardinal Parolin both agreed in favour of more collaborative work for the benefit of the citizens and continued that the same commitment was agreed between Camilleri and Maltese Cardinal Mario Grech in a meeting they had in Rome. Part of the discussions, the Ministry said, were regarding the importance of the relationship between Malta and the Vatican continuing to strengthen.
Camilleri was accompanied by Malta's ambassador to the Vatican State, Frank Zammit, as well as Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa. The Maltese delegation also had a general audience with Pope Francis, where the Police Force Band played for the event.
