The granting of land in Siggiewi for the building of a new Enemalta electricity distribution centre has been approved by the Ministry for Lands and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme, the government said on Thursday.
This decision, the Ministry said, forms part of a wider initiative to strengthen the electricity infrastructure across the country by ensuring resilience and improved capacity. It continued that the new distribution centre in Siggiewi will play a critical role in addressing the needs of the locality as well as other surrounding localities, including Zebbug, Qormi, Zurrieq, Qrendi, and Mqabba.
It stated that the facility will contribute to enhanced electricity services throughout the region by relieving the burden on the existing distribution centres in Kirkop, Hal-Far, Mosta, and Marsa.
Lands Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that the start of the process of allocating land to Enemalta is evidence that the government is giving priority so public land is used for infrastructure-strengthening projects. He continued that it is a confirmation that the resources, including public land, will continue to be used to strengthen the infrastructure for the national good and the public in general.
Energy Minister Miriam Dalli commented that this project clearly shows the government's vision to strengthen the energy infrastructure sustainably and efficiently. "By investing in more capacity and flexibility, we are laying the foundations for the future of the country, and ensuring a more reliable and resilient electricity service for our citizens and businesses," she said.
The government concluded that Enemalta is carrying out an investment in the electricity generation and distribution infrastructure that will rise to €95 million over two years in order to strengthen electricity service.
