After more than a year of requesting recognition for the ranks of the Court Services Agency employees, where the vast majority are members of the General Workers' Union (GWU), this process has been consistently rejected, GWU Deputy General Secretary Kevin Camilleri said in a statement.
He said that the GWU made its first formal request to the Agency on October 23, 2023. "After several attempts and correspondence to find a solution, a second request was made on May 10, 2024, leading to a conciliation meeting on May 31. Unfortunately, no agreement was reached during this meeting. Consequently, on June 13, 2024, the GWU issued its first notice of industrial actions, prompting the Agency to seek advice from the Industrial Tribunal, thus initiating the process for a hearing."
"On September 20, 2024, the GWU sent another email reaffirming that its members were deprived of their fundamental right to associate with a union of their choice. On September 30, 2024, the Tribunal provided advice, that did not resolve the matter, and the case was sent back to the Tribunal for a decision."
"Despite several other attempts to find a solution, including two more emails sent to the Agency last week, no agreement has been reached. The GWU was prepared to initiate industrial actions, but once again, the request was denied. Therefore, actions have been ordered starting today, following a meeting with the workers, who approved these industrial actions," said the Deputy Secretary of the GWU.
No information as to what these actions are were included in the statement.
