Government announces new share

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects Chris Bonett announced a new initiative by Infrastructure Malta to introduce a safer and more accessible walking and cycling route between Luqa and Gudja.

This shared mobility project is part of the Vjal Kulħadd initiative, which attracted 37 applications from 32 Local Councils in Malta and four non-governmental organisations, a government statement said.

The project, covering a one-kilometer route linking the two communities, highlights Infrastructure Malta's commitment to promoting active mobility, alternative transportation, improved accessibility, and better connectivity between public spaces.

The route will feature a dedicated cycling lane and pedestrian pathways starting from Triq il-Gudja, extending along Dawret il-Gudja, continuing towards Triq Bir Miftuħ, and leading to Ġnien Raymond Caruana.

Minister Bonett said that the project would serve the communities of Luqa and Gudja by providing a safe passage for active mobility.

"Mobility should not be limited to cars and public buses, especially in the urban centers of our towns and villages. We need to make a qualitative leap in Malta's urban infrastructure to reflect the mindset shift we aim to achieve among our population," Bonett said.

Infrastructure Malta CEO Steve Ellul said that this project is a "testament to what can be accomplished when we prioritize sustainability, accessibility, and community needs."

He said that through the Vjal Kulħadd initiative, Infrastructure Malta will continue to expand safe routes for pedestrians and cyclists while encouraging the use of alternative transportation methods.
