Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said announced a series of initiatives and financial aid measures for the fishing sector, including support specifically aimed at young fishers.
At a press conference, Bugeja Said explained that one of the schemes will assist fishermen with traditional wooden vessels, such as the 'luzzu' and kajjikki.
Another scheme will provide financial support for the purchase of more sustainable and environmentally friendly machinery.
Bugeja Said that the Budget 2025 measures reflect government's commitment to Maltese and Gozitan fishers, and it will continue offering various forms of assistance as in previous years, while introducing additional measures to reach even more people in this sector.
She said that the financial support provided by the government is strengthening and growing the sector.
Bugeja Said said that around €8 million has been allocated for the upcoming year, including investment in the fishing sector through financial schemes and aid, as well as research initiatives.
She also spoke of efforts to encourage more young people to join the industry.
"In the coming days, we will launch consultations with various stakeholders to identify financial assistance programs that better target young people," she said.
Bugeja Said said that using the model of the Young Farmers scheme, which supports young farmers in acquiring capital for land purchases, government aims to create similar opportunities for young individuals interested in the fishing sector but lacking sufficient capital to do so.
Director of the Aquaculture Directorate within the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Dennis Calleja provided details about the various schemes launched.
He mentioned that in the coming days, Maltese and Gozitan fishers would receive letters with all the necessary information to benefit from the funds.
