A small group of friends today visited the grave of Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici at the Addolorata Cemetery to pay tribute to the former Prime Minister with thanks and respect on the eve of his demise two years ago.
Joe Borg, who has just published 24 accounts of Mifsud Bonnici by his contemporaries in the book KARMENU: IL-VERITȦ, XEJN ANQAS MILL-VERITȦ (KARMENU: THE TRUTH, NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH), said that Mifsud Bonnici's political achievements have been underestimated, forgotten and even misinterpreted over the years.
Joe Borg said that it is the duty of society to recognize this politician's contribution to secure a society that cares and helps those who did not have a voice. For him the protagonists of politics were the common people who needed work to assist their families. He had a great sense of social justice and legislated in favour of free education in Church schools.
"Karmenu was the best defender of democracy in Malta. As Prime Minister he had enshrined in the Constitution of Malta the principle that the party that obtains a majority of votes governs Malta. In no country have amendments been made in the Constitution. Karmenu did not consider his interests or those of the Party in Government, but chose to protect democracy. With his ability all the representatives of the people in the Parliament accepted to embrace the policy of neutrality that he cherished so much throughout his life," said Joe Borg.
Among those who attended were the former Prime Ministers Alfred Sant and Joseph Muscat, former Labour Member of Parliament Salvu Sant and Leonid Mckay PL CEO.
