The "Education Policy: Educators as Policy Makers" was launched on Monday by the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation.

The Ministry said that this policy is intended to ensure that the voices of educators are central in the decision-making process for education. It added that the policy is another step linked to the National Strategy for Education and was a measure included in the government's electoral manifesto.

One of the main objectives of the National Strategy for Education, the Ministry said, is the inclusive and systematic involvement of educators in the consultation phase. It continued that educators should play a greater role as policymakers and also need to be better integrated in research and decision-making. It referred to promises made in the electoral manifesto regarding dialogue with educators from different fields needing to be strengthened. With that said, the Ministry commented that this is all being carried out through this education policy.

Education Minister Clifton Grima said that the government believes that in Malta, everyone has a role to play, "including students and educators". He continued that through this policy, the government is going a step forward and ensuring that the voices of educators will be central in the decision-making process.

As part of this policy, which the Ministry said was developed in collaboration between the Directorate for Planning and Strategic Thinking and the Directorate for Policy Monitoring and Evaluation, it said the leadership group of the Malta Education Foresight Forum was established to ensure evidence-based decision-making. It continued that in this policy, emphasis has been placed on the various stakeholders involved in the consultation process, both internal such as educators and school leaders, as well as external such as other ministries, industry representatives, and civil society organisations.

Speaking further about the policy, the Ministry said that it includes the development of guidelines for the collection of feedback at key stages of the formulation of new policies, the introduction of the Transformation Hub as a dynamic platform where educators contribute directly to the development and evaluation of educational policies and strategies, a commitment to confidentiality and the creation of a safe space for open dialogue in the Transformation Hub, and an approach that encourages educators to participate in discussions about strategic thinking and future trends in education.

The Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Education, Matthew Vella, said that the launch of the Transformation Hub is giving educators a voice in shaping the future of education by directly involving them in policy discussions and ensuring that the people closest to the students are central to decision-making.

The Ministry concluded that this policy is the background for a safe environment where educators and interested parties can "provide informed knowledge for the continuous improvement of the educational system towards a sustainable and progressive future".
