Paola Local Council reiterates

The Paola Local Council has affirmed its objection towards the construction of a crematorium in the locality, officially filed as PA/5280/11, reiterating a formal objection that had been made in September 2021.

The council said that the site proposed as part of the application is right next to the entrance from behind the Addolorata Cemetary. It continued that since then and up until a few days ago, nothing else had been heard regarding the situation, and the application is still pending for the Planning Authority.

The council commented that now, as discussion regarding a crematorium in the locality has started again, and it is reported that there will be changes to the original 2021 plans, the local council met and unanimously presented a list of declarations.

The first, it began, is that the council's position remains identical to what it was in 2021, that being opposition to the project. It added that the council feels that the regulations of 2024 regarding the construction of a crematorium in Malta were written in a manner to facilitate the only pending application. The council continued that the final decision regarding this project should not be based on an outline application, but should require a full application so that the proper studies can be carried out, including an environmental impact assessment.

With that said the Paola Local Council commented that the construction of a crematorium at the proposed site goes against various Planning Authority policies and that the site forms part of the Bird and Wild Rabbit Protection Zone. It added that the site is also in the Scheduled Monument Setting and is part of an agricultural zone.

Among other points, the council remarked that the protection provided to residents of the urban zone where the project is proposed should be maintained. It added that the lack of information around the project, such as the potential emissions on the urban zones of Paola, Luqa, and Marsa concerns the councillors and is causing significant concern among the residents of the aforementioned localities.

"The locality of Paola is to this day suffering from similar developments which have happened in the past, such as the incinerator in Marsa," the council wrote. It also referred to difficulties faced by the residents as a result of power station emissions, and said that the residents of the area do not want to repeat a similar situation with the development of a crematorium.

The Paola Local Council concluded that while it is urging the relevant authorities not to accept this project, it will be consulting with the localities of Tarxien, Saint Lucia, Luqa, and Marsa "which are found nearby and can be affected by this development", so that there is a single front for this project to not be conducted at the indicated site.
