New agreement signed for iSchool Grannies project between five local councils and AACC

The Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC) has signed a new agreement with five local councils for the iSchool Grannies project. The five localities of Mellieħa, Żurrieq, Żebbuġ, Nadur, and Qala shall join Bormla, Xewkija, and Kalkara who are already part of this project.
This agreement is targeted to continue strengthening the participation of the elderly in social life while offering support to primary school children across Malta and Gozo.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, said that the iSchool Grannies project is showing us that the elderly can continue contributing to their communities.
"Such initiatives show that age should not be a limitation for one's participation in society and strengthen collaboration between generations," Parliamentary Secretary Agius Galea said.
He also remarked how this inter-generational collaboration will lead to more friendship and knowledge being shared between children and the elderly given the unique opportunity to feel appreciated and participative.
Alison Zerafa Civelli, the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, expressed her satisfaction at the signing of this agreement, and emphasised the importance of local councils to continue offering more services for their local communities.
"The Local Councils have a crucial role to continue to strengthen the participation of the elderly in society," she said, "this iSchool Grannies project shows how much of a difference they can make."
Zerafa Civelli encouraged more local councils to join the present eight local councils that are now participating in this initiative.
The Chief Executive of the Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC), Renzo Degabriele, thanked the local councils for their collaboration and iterated how the iSchool Grannies project is already leaving a positive impact on the communities where it has been launched.
So far, 17 senior citizens are participating as School Grannies and are collectively collaborating with over 2,000 students. The iSchool Grannies not only serve as friends for the children at the time of their entry and exit from school, but also provide a sense of support and security in their respective communities.
