The Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation has stated that during the last months, it has decided to take up a "fundamental change" within its ministerial operations through an approach that places educators at the centre of its decision-making.

"The ministry believes that educators, along with students and their parents, should be placed at the heart of its beliefs and processes," the Ministry declared.

This ministerial approach was said to be inspired by a 2022 survey carried out among educators on job satisfaction. In this survey, participants had requested to have a central role in the decision-making and in the development of policies. A similar response was reportedly noted through a survey on the learning outcomes framework; this reiterated the desire for the communication between concerned parties to be more valued for the benefit of all students - especially communication directly related to the decision-making mechanism.

"In the policies we are drawing up, all of which are linked to the strategy's outcomes, we will see that the educator will have a direct involvement in their design, since they will be drawn up according to the response of the educators," Minister Grima said.

The Minister for Education, Clifton Grima, said that this approach and request for more valued communication are enshrined by the National Education Strategy (2024-2030).

"This is reflected not only because educators designed the foundation of this strategy, but we are also empowering the educator, as promised in the Government's Electoral Manifesto, to be directly involved in the design of the policies of the ministry," he continued.

The Education Minister shared these words during a visit this morning to the San Ġorġ Preca College, Ħamrun Secondary School (Liċeo) this morning. Grima visited the school for World Teacher Day, which is to be celebrated on Friday, 5 October, as it is every year.

Minister Grima also recalled how the Sectoral Agreement for Educators is a "substantial improvement" as both a financial package on all scales as well as in regard to working conditions. He added that this improved agreement will result in a faster career progression for educators and more training opportunities, on top of their central role in decision-making processes.

Grima explained that educators, of all grades, are crucial to the educational ecosystem, that education is one of the main sectors that affects the wellbeing of society, and that it is also vital to the strengthening of social resilience. As such, he justified as these as the reasons behind why measures are being implemented to protect educators' welfare, similarly to how measures are already in place to protect students' welfare.

"We believe that our educational system must ensure the full development of a person - the person who is at the centre," Grima concluded.

During his visit to the Lyceum, Minister Grima spoke to teachers and students and wished them all a great academic year.
