Independent candidate Arnold Cassola has requested the Ombudsman's Commissioner for Environment and Planning to probe into the Planning Authority's sanctioning of Joseph Portelli's illegal penthouses in Sannat. 

In a statement on Thursday, Cassola said he wanted to draw the attention of the Ombudsman's office to the PA's sanctioning of two illegal penthouses in Sannat despite the fact that they were declared unlawful by a court of law.

"The decision to approve sanctioning for these illegal structures raises serious questions about the integrity and responsibility of the PA," Cassola wrote in his letter.

The Malta's highest court had been ignored by the Planning Authority, establishing a dangerous precedent for future developments. 

Cassola called on the Commissioner to examine whether the proper process was followed, and whether there were any irregularities or influences that could have led to the PA's decision. 

The PA's actions go against the preservation of the natural environment and proper developments that are built according to the legal framework, Cassola said.
