Local Councils and NGOs have been invited to propose initiatives as part of the European Mobility Week campaign, with the selected initiatives to receive financial support from Transport Malta.

Transport Minister Chris Bonett and Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli announced the details related to the European Mobility Week 2024, which will take place between the 16th and 22nd of September under this year's theme "Shared Public Space."

The European Mobility Week, led by the European Commission, encourages more efforts toward sustainable mobility, urging localities to implement practical solutions for urban challenges such as traffic congestion, air pollution, and accessibility issues, a government statement read.

This year's theme emphasizes the importance of public spaces in urban areas, road safety, and quality of life.

Transport Malta, in collaboration with the Association of Local Councils, is supporting the European Mobility Week, where Local councils and NGOs have been invited to propose initiatives as part of this campaign.

Bonett said that such activities highlight the government's commitment to continuously provide all possible resources to improve the quality of life in communities.

"With this campaign, we will be providing more opportunities for local councils to put forward specific proposals that improve the environment of their localities and communities," he said.

Bonett said that Local councils will find all the necessary support to ensure further transformations of urban spaces and the promotion of alternative means of transport.

Zerafa Civelli spoke of the importance of the European Mobility Week, as it raises more awareness about the importance of cleaner and more efficient transport.

She appealed to local councils to seize the opportunity and come up with initiatives that enhance their localities.

"I urge local councils to use this week to see how they can implement more innovative measures while taking care of air quality, all in consultation with the residents in their respective localities," Zerafa Civelli said.

President of the Association of Local Councils Mario Fava said that by working together, a lasting impact can be created, improve shared public spaces, and enhance the quality of life for all residents across Malta and Gozo.
