The Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, together with Project Green, formally announced the extension of the Bengħajsa Family Park in Birżebbuġa through the issuance of a call for offers for works.

The call for tenders, issued through Project Green, aims to restore a disused area next to the park and transform it into a lively community space with enhanced landscaping, a statement by the government read.

"The Family Park, originally earmarked by previous administrations to hold containers, was turned into a green open area by Project Green, opening its doors to families and tourists alike in March 2023. The extension will lead to the Park's expansion by a further 7,000 square metres, the planting of over 140 trees such as Holm oak, Carob tree and Bay Laurel, geogrid paving with beaten earth and gravel paths for accessibility. Recreational features such as slides and inclusive facilities will be installed. All surfaces will be 100% permeable, using sustainable materials."

The project is situated within the larger framework of the Bengħajsa Family Park, divided into multiple tiers to maximize the area's natural topography. The development will include an amenity block with public toilets and a security room.

Following a site visit together with Project Green Chief Operations Officer Perit Beverly Costa and the Birżebbuġa Local Council, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli described the Bengħajsa Family Park project as a testament to the government's commitment to increasing green spaces. "This Park serves as a green lung to an ever-growing community and this extension will serve as further public space being made available to adults, children and teenagers alike for their enjoyment. These are the projects that will help to continue binding communities together," Minister Miriam Dalli said.

Perit Beverley Costa said: "This will be a project that balances ecological considerations with community needs, creating a space that everyone can enjoy. The publication of the tender for works is a significant milestone in the Bengħajsa Family Park project, with this extension estimated to be completed close to Q4 of next year."

The statement read: "Through the entities within it, the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour has regenerated several open spaces, including the Ġnien ta' fuq il-Glażiż in Birgu, the Romeo Romano Garden in Santa Venera, Victor Calvagna Garden in Mosta, Rnella Garden in Kalkara, San Filippu Garden in Floriana, the extension of San Klement in Żabbar, Pollinator Garden in San Ġwann and a number of dog parks among other work. This is while preparations are underway on greening projects in locations such as Santa Lucija, Mellieħa, Ħal Lija, Ħal Luqa and Ħal Kirkop, among others."
