A Nationalist Party MP is the latest person to receive documents addressed to foreigners at a property he owns, as more and more such instances come to light – lending credence to allegations of a racket in the issuance of residence cards.

Albert Buttigieg took to Facebook to share a picture of documents he received at his residence from telecommunications company Epic.

The documents are addressed to Aimon Ahnin El Kramin and Samir Kholti, “amongst several others”, who Buttigieg said do not live in his property.

“Are these the fake ID cards that Jason Azzopardi wrote and spoke about?  I am asking,” Buttigieg wrote on his social media page.

He also noted that Epic should not be accepting every application without confirming that the identity documents are valid or not, adding that these instances are a bad advert for Epic.

He added that he is informed that Epic is investigating the matter, especially given that many of these documents pertain to unpaid bills.

It appears that Epic has recently issued a circular to all its customers – but this has included those registered on an address where they were apparently not living, with multiple people sharing such instances on social media.

“If Byron Camilleri really wants to do his job, he should investigate every single new ID card issued by Identity Malta in the last five years,” Buttigieg said, adding that he would also be filing a police report about the case.

Former PN MP Jason Azzopardi – who was the first to bring the allegations concerning Identita’ to light – was more unequivocal in his judgement: he said that Identity Malta had now even “stolen” an MP’s address, and insisted that the racket had been ongoing for years and Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa and Prime Minister Robert Abela were fully aware of it and never sought an inquiry.

He has shared several similar cases over the past few days: just on Wednesday he shared a case of another Maltese person receiving the same Epic circular made out to a foreigner who supposedly lives at his address in St Paul’s Bay.

Another woman shared in a popular Facebook group on Tuesday that a foreign individual was seemingly registered as living in her pensioner father’s house.

Azzopardi even shared that one Maltese home owner had received the tax compensation cheque issued to all workers at their address with a foreigner named on it – a foreigner who had never lived there.

Last Sunday Azzopardi shared a story of a person whose mother had just been admitted into a state-run care home.  Just days later, a letterbox appeared on her house – a letterbox which the house owner’s son noticed.

Within days, the letterbox had received two letters from Identita’ telling two different foreign nationals – supposedly living in this house – that their residence document was ready to be picked up.

Azzopardi has estimated that some 18,000 identity documents had been fraudulently issued in a wide-reaching government racket.  He has filed a request for a magisterial inquiry into the case. Identita’ meanwhile has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

On Wednesday it issued a statement instructing people on what they should do if they are receiving letters addressed to someone who is not living there, saying that this usually happens when someone leasing a property does not go through the process of changing their residence or when “persons are deceptively and illegally making use of the address.”
