During the second quarter of 2024, road traffic accidents increased and casualties decreased when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Road traffic fatalities amounted to three, the NSO said Wednesday. 

The number of reported traffic accidents during the second quarter of 2024 reached 4,436, up by 4.0 per cent over the same period in 2023. The Northern Harbour district registered the most accidents with 1,520  cases or 34.3 per cent of all accidents.

Road traffic casualties decreased by 7.9 per cent to 409 over the same period in 2023. Grievously injured persons amounted to 102, and consisted of 64 drivers, 8 passengers and 30 pedestrians/cyclists/others. The injuries suffered by two drivers and one pedestrian proved fatal. During this quarter, one less fatality occurred when compared to the same period in 2023.

The majority of those grievously injured were males (72.5 per cent). Moreover, the fatalities that occurred during this quarter involved three males. As regard to age cohorts, 36.9 per cent of the casualties involved persons in the 26 to 40 age bracket.

The largest number of road traffic casualties (47.9 per cent) involved passenger cars, followed by motorcycles (37.9 per cent) and goods-carrying vehicles (8.1 per cent). The fatalities included two drivers crashing into a property and a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle. Cyclists involved in traffic accidents amounted to 12, where four suffered grievous injuries, six suffered slight injuries and two suffered insignificant injuries. Road traffic casualties resulting from accidents between vehicles topped the list with 65.5 per cent of all road traffic casualties (Table 7).

The highest number of road traffic casualties occurred on Fridays with 76 casualties, and the highest number of road traffic accidents occurred on Tuesdays with 752 cases or 17.0 per cent of the total. The time bracket with the highest number of road traffic accidents occurred between 12:00 – 14:59 with 971 cases or 21.9 per cent of the total, followed by the 09:00 – 11:59 time bracket with 933 cases. The least number of accidents occurring daily took place between 03:00 – 05:59 with 55 cases. 

The highest incidence of road traffic accidents was registered in Birkirkara with 294 cases, followed by Ħal Qormi and San Pawl Il-Baħar, with 222 and 218 cases respectively.

San Lawrenz, L-Għasri and Ta’ Kerċem registered less than five road traffic accidents.
