Minister for Lands Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli presided over the signing of a devolution agreement between the Lands Authority and the Xgħajra Local Council for the latter’s administrative offices

Through to this agreement, a government building currently administered by the Local Council, located at the Grazzja Battery, as well as a workshop and a space where maintenance work is carried out by the Council’s workers, will formally be handed over to the Xgħajra Local Council.

Zrinzo Azzopardi said it is encouraging to see Local Councils insist and work to continue improving their services for residents.

“It is precisely for this reason that, as we are doing in various localities, we felt it appropriate that this site also be handed over to the Xgħajra Local Council,” Zrinzo Azzopardi said.

He went on to explain that the Xgħajra Local Council will also benefit from the capping scheme on the annual rent of the land, which is only €500 per year.

“I hope that this agreement will lead to this building being utilized in the best possible way, always for the benefit of the residents of this locality,” he said.

Zerafa Civelli welcomed with satisfaction the transfer of the administrative offices of the Xgħajra Local Council.

She said that it is of great importance for a Local Council to be the owner of the building from which it operates.

“To continue assisting Local Councils in their work, in recent months we have seen a number of land transfers in various localities. Through these transfers, Local Councils are in a position to operate better and also carry out various projects on these lands, which will eventually benefit the respective community,” Zerafa Civelli said.

Mayor of Xgħajra Neil Attard said that through the agreement signed, the Local Council will be able to improve services to the Xgħajra community and the public who visit the locality.
