Malta continues to strengthen

The Foundation for Social Welfare Services' Aġenzija Appoġġ is continuing to strengthen its commitment to fighting human trafficking through a comprehensive and holistic approach which prioritises the well-being and support of all affected individuals, the Ministry for Social Policy and Children's Rights said in a statement on Thursday.

The Ministry said that on the International Day Against Human Trafficking, The Foundation for Social Welfare Services organised a conference focused on the theme "Preventing human trafficking: Stopping the abuse before it starts". It said that this conference was attended by several relevant stakeholders who discussed the best ways to help victims.

It said that there are currently seventeen people receiving help through Aġenzija Appoġġ, which is organising sessions for both professionals and victims. The aim, it said, is to increase awareness, create a safer environment for all individuals, and prevent future cases.

Aġenzija Appoġġ runs a home for victims of human trafficking, which the Ministry said functions as a safe and supportive environment where victims can access essential services, receive advice, and begin the process of emotional and physical healing. The residence has welcomed eleven residents of different nationalities during the past year, it added.

Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon said that the government is committed to continuing to strengthen knowledge about the warning signs of human trafficking by improving communication among professionals. He said that the main priority remains the provision of long-term support to individuals at risk.

Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg said that Malta will soon have its first national strategy with measures designed to combat human trafficking. She continued that "a lot of preparatory work has been done" across the last three years, and that this work was done with the help of experts from the Council of Europe

Buttigieg said that the Directorate of Human Rights is running another awareness campaign about the various forms of human trafficking in order to raise awareness about this type of organised crime, "which even needs public cooperation to be fought".
