Never before have so many people been on holiday in Hungary as this year: in the first two hundred days of the year, the number of tourists was up by nearly 12 percent and the number of overnight stays by nearly 8 percent compared to last year, the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) said.

According to the National Tourist Data Supply Centre (NTAK), over 8.8 million guests arrived at Hungarian accommodation establishments between the beginning of January and mid-summer, spending 21.3 million nights there. The month since the start of the school holidays has also seen stronger tourism results than in the previous year, with hotel turnover in these 30 days reaching nearly 6 million nights, up by around 7 percent year-on-year, while international tourism increased by 11 percent.

By July 18, almost 19 percent more foreign visitors had arrived in Hungary and 6 percent more Hungarians spent their holidays in the country than a year earlier.

The number of nights spent in Hungarian accommodation was evenly balanced, with international guests spending 10.7 million nights in Hungary and domestic guests 10.6 million nights, also up on the previous year.

The capital city accounted for 37 percent of the overnight stays. The 8 million guest nights in Budapest were 13 percent more compared with the first two hundred days of 2023,

with the number of foreign guest nights increasing by almost 15 percent to 6.7 million.

While the share of international visitors in Budapest was 86 percent, nearly 70 percent of the nights spent outside the capital were accounted for by domestic tourists. The most popular region in the first two hundred days of the year was Lake Balaton, where the number of overnight stays increased by nearly 7 percent compared to the same period last year. Hotels in the region accounted for 30 percent of all nights spent in the countryside.

Among the tourist regions, Lake Balaton’s area, with its natural waterfront beaches, Debrecen and its region, with its numerous bathing experiences, and Mátra-Bükk were the most visited. These three regions recorded the highest number of overnight stays. According to the data, the most popular spots in the month since the start of the holiday season were the area around the Parliament, Margaret Island and the Sóstó thermal bath in Nyíregyháza.
