More than 92% of the Malta Union of Teachers members voted in favour of a sectoral agreement which the union reached with the government, the MUT said Saturday.
2,462 were eligible to vote following their active registration, the MUT said. 2,108 votes tallied and 35 abstained. 1,945 voted in favour, 163 voted against.
This is the conclusion of a 1.5-year long process of negotiations with the Government, which was preceded by several months of preparatory work including consultations with members.
The MUT has just communicated formally with the Minister of Education to proceed with the signing of the new Sectoral Agreement. The MUT thanks the Officials, Council, Delegates, Working Groups, Members and Staff for this result.
The union has been negotiating the agreement for the last two years, which culminated in a one-day strike in November.
In May, the two sides announced they had come to terms but when the MUT presented the agreement to the teachers, it had been turned down, pushing the union to return to the negotiating table.
Two weeks ago the two sides concluded the talks with the MUT presenting the finalised deal to its members.
