Gavin Bazunu is set for his first appearance in Southampton colours since last April, when he lines out for the Under-21s against Fulham on Friday night.

Bazunu has been sidelined since his last appearance in a 3-2 win over Watford on April 13.

The Dubliner suffered a ruptured achilles tendon while warming up a week later for the game against Preston.

However, according to the Southampton website, Bazunu “will continue his long recovery from injury at the end of last season with minutes for the Under-21s tonight against Fulham.”

It will be a major milestone in the 22-year-old former Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper’s recovery from his first serious injury.

New signing Welington is also expected to feature in the Staplewood Campus clash.

Russell Martin, recently dismissed as Southampton boss, said last month that Bazunu’s recovery was ahead of schedule.

“He’s doing really, really well,” said Martin. “Gav is flying. We knew he would be because of his mentality, his determination and his drive.

“The toughest job for the medical guys is to slow him down a little bit and make sure he doesn’t do too much because that’s his go-to really.

“He’s got an amazing mentality. He’s on the grass now but he’s not training with a group yet. He is a good few weeks away from that.

“He’s ahead of schedule. It’s great to see him with his gloves back on and diving around. He’s got a bit of a smile on his face, he never smiles too much, but he has a bit of a smile.

“We want to get him fit and training for a while and then assess the situation.

“We need to decide if it’s best for him to be here, competing with the other guys or playing football every week.”

Martin has since been replaced by Ivan Juric. Bazunu is not currently registered to play in the Premier League for Southampton.
