Woman, 70s, airlifted to hospital in critical condition after Cavan crash as gardai close road
Gardai have issued an appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward
An elderly woman is in critical condition following a serious road traffic collision in Co Cavan.
The two-car collision occurred in Lisgrey just outside Virginia at approximately 1.10pm on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency services were called the scene and a passenger of one car, a woman aged in her 70s, was brought by air ambulance to the Mater Hospital in Dublin, where she remains in a critical condition.
The occupant of the second car was also taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The scene has been preserved for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and the road is set to remain closed overnight.
A garda spokesperson said in a statement: "Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a serious injury road traffic collision in Virginia, Co Cavan, on Wednesday, 8th January, 2025.
"At approximately 1.10pm, Gardaí and emergency services responded to a two-car collision in Lisgrey.
"A passenger of one car, a woman aged in her 70s, was brought by air ambulance to the Mater Hospital, Dublin, where she is in a critical condition. The occupant of the second car was hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
"The scene has been preserved for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The road will remain closed overnight."
The garda spokesperson added: "Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward.
"Additionally, road users travelling on the N3 between The Lavey Inn and Virginia between 12.45pm and 1.15pm and who may have camera footage (including dashcam recordings) are asked to make it available to Gardaí.
"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on 049 436 8800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."
Gardai say that investigation into the incident are ongoing.
