Robbie Keane could be announced as the new Ferencvaros manager by tomorrow, according to reports in Hungary.

The former Ireland captain appears to be closing in on his return to management, having left Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv in June.

Hungarian media outlet M4 Sport is reporting that an agreement between Keane and Ferencvaros is close to competition, and that he is due in Budapest this week.

If the deal is sealed, Keane would be poised to join the squad at a training camp in Spain ahead of their return to competitive action after Hungary’s winter break.

Ferencvaros have been looking for a new manager since Dutchman Pascal Jansen left on New Year’s Eve, with a view to taking charge of New York City in the coming days.

Ferencvaros president Gábor Kubatov confirmed today that an appointment is imminent, but refused to reveal the identity of their preferred candidate.

Keane was first linked with the Ferencvaros job last summer, before Jansen was appointed.

Ferencvaros are the most successful club in Hungary and the reigning league champions are currently second in the table at the halfway point.

Ferencvaros will play two friendlies in Spain this Friday and next Wednesday before finishing their Europa League group phase against Eintracht Frankfurt and AZ Alkmaar.

Sitting 16th in the Europa League standings, Keane’s potential new club are on track for the knockout stages in February.
