Martin Clunes dropped a stunning three stone in just three months, thanks to a special diet which he has openly credited for his transformation.

Speaking to MailOnline about his dramatic weight loss journey, the 63-year-old actor revealed: "I was fat – and while I was getting heavy, I had tired knees and stuff."

The Men Behaving Badly star explained how he turned to the '5:2 diet', also known as The Fast Diet, which was made famous by late TV doctor Michael Mosley.

Clunes experienced significant weight loss, noting that "the weight came off" when he adopted this intermittent fasting regime which involves eating normally for five days of the week and significantly reducing calorie intake on the other two, often referred to as 'fasting' days. On such days, women consume around 500 calories while men limit themselves to 600, reports the Mirror.

Experts at Healthline suggest choosing any two days with a gap between them, like fasting on Mondays and Thursdays with small meals, then resuming normal eating for the rest of the week. Not only did Clunes shed pounds, but he also spoke highly of the diet's cholesterol-lowering benefits.

He mentioned that he has since modified the fasting routine to 6:1, reports the Mirror.

BirminghamLive also reports that celebrities like Sherlock sensation Benedict Cumberbatch and Jennifer Aniston have previously given similar fasting diets the thumbs up too. "It's easy and seems to keep the weight off me," Martin added in the 2017 conversation.

This involves eating just one modest meal in the later part of the day, but conscientiously stopping at 80% satiety-hence this rule's moniker.

Dr Deborah Lee, a GP at Dr Fox Pharmacy, previously told the Mirror: "Imagine what 80% of your meal would look like, and aim to leave 20% behind."

"Calorie restriction is believed to slow the ageing process. Eating less lowers the metabolic rate. With less metabolic processes underway, less oxidation is taking place. Oxidative stress probably underpins the development of many of the chronic diseases we see today – heart disease, cancer, type-2 diabetes and dementia."
