Alarming Met Eireann weather map shows bone-chilling -12C freeze hitting Ireland
Weather warnings have been issued as Ireland's deep freeze worsens. It comes as worrying Met Eireann temperature models show lows of -12C later this week.
Ireland's cold snap is far from over - with Met Eireann warning that conditions will worsen as the week progresses. Multiple weather alerts have been issued, forecasting more snow and a dramatic drop in temperatures.
The ongoing freeze is expected to bring hazardous conditions across the country, with icy roads and difficult travelling conditions persisting throughout this week.
A nationwide Status Yellow warning has been extended for six days and remains in effect until midnight on Friday. The warning highlights "very cold nights with widespread frost and ice" and predicts temperatures that will struggle to rise above freezing during the day. Potential impacts include hazardous travel conditions, icy patches and widespread disruptions.
In addition, a separate Status Yellow snow and ice warning is in effect from noon today until noon tomorrow for the entire country. It warns of wintry showers leading to further snow accumulation, with risks including hazardous driving conditions, poor visibility and potential travel disruptions.

Fears are growing that the country could face a deep freeze even worse than initially predicted. Met Eireann’s latest weather maps show temperatures plummeting to a bone-chilling -12C later this week.
The 'Air Temperature' model from Met Eireann forecasts the worst of the cold to hit during the early hours of Wednesday and Thursday.
It shows temperatures dipping to -11C in western areas on Wednesday morning and as low as -12C in the southwest on Thursday morning.
Met Eireann's official forecast currently states that temperatures could drop to -8C on Wednesday and reach 0C on Thursday, before becoming "less cold" from Friday onwards.

Deputy Head of Forecasting Liz Coleman said: "This prolonged cold spell will bring very hazardous conditions over the next few days with no real opportunity for melt of significant lying snow. Given there has been a lot of snow over the weekend, as well as rain which has now frozen, there will be really dangerous conditions on the roads. The icy conditions will be particularly impactful for some road users, such as cyclists and motorcyclists, so alternative travel should be considered if possible. Really slippery on footpaths too so tricky conditions underfoot. We’d ask the public give extra time for any travel that they have to make."
